They do seem a bit prone to these short-term events. Before recruiting Pepper there were two Gamma Attack events, and now a month-long (!) tie in with Guardians of the Galaxy. (which doesn't run properly on my phone, grump, but does on my tablet, so I will have to contact their helpdesk).
I managed to recruit Pepper without spending any money, but it was a bit of a grind - I think all poor Falcon did for days was fly 3 hour recons. They kept _changing_ the number of things to collect each round, and then getting overall lower, and so it went from "probably impossible but I'll give it a try anyway" to "oh! done two days early after grinding like mad".
The Guardians of the Galaxy tie in is massively complicated. I have decided I'm not even trying to figure out if it's doable, I'm just going to get done what I can and collect what pretties I can along the way. They seem to want me to cough up lots for Nebula, but screw that.
