I think this one wins points for chutzpah. The article linked in the scam is actually genuine, and talks about how Warren Buffett and a number of other very rich investors do actually give a lot of money away to charity (Warren Buffett being among the rare breed of billionaires who apparently feels he has enough money now, thank you). So that's the one thing in the whole darn rigmarole which is actually accurate.

The rest is bullshit. There is no $5 million US waiting for you. If you spend approximately 10 seconds googling Warren Buffett and reading up his wikipedia article, you will discover the money he is giving away is mostly being distributed via the Gates Foundation - not through random emails to random schlubs on the internet. Oh, and as at 2013, he'd sent approximately one email in his life. Unless he's really caught on fast, I doubt he's the one behind these particular letters.

(If he was, he's of the generation which would consider it only polite to send a letter which was correctly punctuated, grammatically accurate, and proofread.)

I rather doubt someone like Warren Buffett would be using a gmail throw-away address, either. He's much more likely to be using a corporate address through his company, Bershire Hathaway.

So, 10 points to the scammer for trying, minus several million (let's say 5 million, shall we?) for actual effect.

No, it isn't real. Big money billionaires aren't going to be giving you money directly unless you're an actual charitable foundation which offers receipts and tax breaks (because let's be realistic, that's why millionaires and billionaires give money to charity in the first place: the money they donate saves them money in taxes) - and even then, they're not going to be doing it via random emails. It's a scam.

Still not real, and for exactly the same reasons I put in the original post.

1) While Warren Buffett is giving away money to charities, he's mainly giving this money through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

2) The foundation is most likely to be giving the money to causes which are registered charities, which are able to give their donors receipts which can be used for tax credit purposes.

3) Warren Buffett is of the generation which would consider sending a correctly spelled and punctuated letter to be a form of politeness toward the recipient.

4) Warren Buffett is a noted technophobe who had, by 2013, only sent one email under his personal name. While he no doubt does have a personal email address, I rather sincerely doubt it's going to be a gmail throw-away address. (It's more likely to be through Berkshire Hathaway).

But hey, it's your money, and you're the one who stands to either gain or lose should you hand your details over to this scammer. My only suggestion if you choose to follow up on this scam is to hand the scammer the details of a brand spanking new bank account you've just opened with a nice low balance (say, about $10). That way you're limiting the amount of money they can steal from you via bank transfers. Oh, and if they start demanding money from you for "administration fees" that need to be paid before they can transfer the money to you, set yourself an upper limit - I'd be saying about $100 - for the maximum amount you're going to pay them.

Yeah, this one is still a scam. And it's still a scam for the same reasons the other was a scam: billionaires give away money to registered charities as a tax reduction strategy. Unless you're sharing an email address with a registered charity, you're not likely to be receiving grants from Warren Buffett (and even there, charities have to solicit donations from billionaires).

If it sounds too good to be true, it's too good to be true.
