We may be talking past each other with regards to definitions. As I stated in a different comment, I see social awkwardness as being a cognitive gap - a lack of information about cultural and social mores, rules, and practices, which exists as a result of poor socialisation.

The feeling of anxiety or nervousness in a social setting I would define as "social anxiety".
