what they're actually fighting for (once you strip out the rhetoric, and boil things down to their core notions) is that they should share in the benefits of society (things like infrastructure, services and so on) but not have to deal with any of the costs of society.

Absolutely - well put!

And yeah, as you say, we can't say 'oh so sad they've lost friends cos of their views' and not look at how damaging and dehumanising those views actually are.
