It does get depressing learning just how far eugenic-sourced thinking has spread in the community. I mean, eugenics as a philosophy of public health went out of style for a while there, but it always appealed to a certain section of the population - usually the same people who tended to believe in the "Just World" theory (despite all the considerable evidence against it). Seems like they're starting to come out of their closets now, and getting louder and louder about the whole business. It's usually tied to glibertarian philosophies about social relationships and social responsibility as well (which means I'm more inclined to discard it - the glibertarians tend to remind me very strongly of the sort of ten-year-old boy who thinks he's "roughing it" and "living independently" when he sulks off to the tree-house his dad built in the back yard and lives off stashed snacks his mum bought rather than coming in for his lunch)
My own response tends to be of the "live as long and as well as I can just to spite them" variety, but then, I'm petty and vindictive like that. I find it helps working where I do as well - working for a disability service provider, we're not willing to write off any of our customers as dispensable or "acceptable collateral damage", so I'm reminded on a regular basis there are decent people out there.
