I've been thinking about this, with regards to lamingtons (sponge cake cut into squares/cubes, dipped in chocolate icing, then rolled in coconut), which are a pretty solidly Australian thing, and yeah, you have a point. Lamingtons seem to partake of the cupcake or patty cake nature, rather than the slice nature, possibly because of the sponge cake base.
